Colors by Number launched!

http://colorsbynumber.com/

Colors by Number is a web-based application for exploring personal perception and interaction of color. It is not meant to be another color scheme generator or "color-picker" (there are plenty of those out there already).

In either Manual or Auto mode, the app can display upwards of 4 billion color combinations - strictly combinatoric - rule inserted in programming that says no 2 colors can be the same in any given 4-color combination, so you get 256*255*254*253. Then again, to cycle through all of them in Auto mode at 3-second intervals would take approximately 400 years.

3 "themes" (upper right-hand corner) to choose from, can be switched at any time. As such, the 3 themes offer:
1) colors within colors
2) colors side-by-side
3) colors on top of, and adjoining, other colors

Auto mode - screen refreshes every 3 seconds. 2 button options (Play and Pause)
Manual mode - only one button option (Advance)

Left and right control panels can be collapsed or expanded, depending on whether or not you want to:
1) Save, View, Delete or Email/record color results (left control panel)
2) Manipulate colors either by sliders or entering numerical RGB or Hex values by hand (right control panel)
3) collapse both left and right control panels and simply watch the colors change in Auto mode every 3 seconds until you see something you like (then you can click the Pause button, and expand one or both of the control panels and take any of the aforementioned actions)

This app goes along with a print series I'm working on and hope to eventually show in a gallery, based on random color combinations generated by this app. Picture 1,000 color bars (25 across x 40 down per sheet) defined by their 6-digit Hex values. And another, similar theme having to do with the Golden Section ratio (phi=0.6180399... built out to 50,000 decimal places) also represented in 6-digit Hex numbers).

By all means, please feel free to share with friends and colleagues.

Talking to space aliens :: Plaques onboard the 1972 Pioneer 10 and 1973 Pioneer 11 spacecraft featuring a pictorial message from humankind should either be intercepted by extraterrestrial life. Designed by Carl Sagan and his then-wife Linda Salzman Sagan. Then along came the "Golden Records" -- onboard both Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. The phonographs (state-of-the-art technology at the time) contain sounds and images selected to portray "the diversity of life and culture on Earth." As Carl Sagan noted, "The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space." As of 2008, the Voyager spacecraft became the third and fourth human artifacts to escape entirely from the solar system. All space aliens out there take note - keep your record players handy!
